Background: Healthcare for the Baltimore-Washington Metropolis

CMSI started working with the University of Maryland Medical System in 2004. Since then, we have executed numerous projects in multiple facilities, including the main medical center in downtown Baltimore, University Midtown campus, St. Joseph’s in Towson, Shore Health in Easton, and Baltimore Washington Medical Center (BWMC).

When one of their hospitals needs an invasive project that could affect their workflow, they rely on us as a preferred contractor. We execute fast-paced invasive projects as efficiently as possible, and we thrive in environments that demand cleanliness and infection control. We have successfully renovated various floors and towers of BWMC, transforming the 70-year-old building into a comfortable, up-to-date hospital that makes patients feel at home.

Objectives: Interior Renovation of Seventh Floor

BWMC sought to provide their patients with an updated hospital facility, including improved infrastructure, state-of-the-art systems, and modern finishes. Recognizing our unique abilities to strategically plan turnkey projects and minimize disruptions to clinical operations, BWMC contracted us to completely demolish and renovate the interior of their seventh floor west tower.

Approach: Abatement and Crane Lifting Construction Materials

This project required the active abatement of lead paint and asbestos, as is typical in older buildings. We implemented special measures to properly manage the logistics necessary to facilitate this kind of project in an active hospital.

We carefully coordinated our work to minimize disruptions for BWMC. In order to transport the construction materials directly up to the 7th floor, we removed the glass from the windows and utilized a crane to carry the materials through the open windows. This solution enabled us to avoid using the elevators and hallways as material passageways, and it ensured that the project was completed efficiently and on time.

Results: 30 In-Patient Units

We successfully constructed a 30-patient room medical surgery unit and concourse area. The project was completed on schedule, which allowed the staff enough time to move in and become operational by the beginning of 2016. By leveraging our exceptional design-assist and construction management services, BWMC offers a well-designed healing environment for today’s patients in the Baltimore-Washington area.
